As a follow-up, I ended up really enjoying this new record of theirs, but this song sticks out like a sore thumb whereas I'd call songs like "I, the Mask" and "Call My Name" some of their legitimate all-time best.

I'm not seeing your point, I don't understand what you mean by 'sullied by the act of observation', or what relevance the 'attempt to remain apolitical' means.
I also don't see how their eventual release matters.
Here's how I see it, if Kafka's books were never released then they couldn't have had any effect, but they would remain political per se.
And for most definitions of political in this thread they'd be apolitical, since they're not preaching any particular formal political view, they're a comment on bureaucratic issues that exist in any institution. That's why I bring them up, from what I can determine from people who've argued against me in this thread they're technically apolitical art, but the idea that Kafka's work wasn't political is so absurd it should demonstrate the flaw in the logic that art can be apolitical at all.
But, even if you were the only person aware of your art, it has some political effect because producing it affects your outlook. Maybe it reinforces beliefs you already held, or maybe it's exploratory and it somehow changes your views, but either way it has some effect. Now that your art has been brought into this conversation it's become political because it's being used to facilitate an exploration of politics, and demonstrate political viewpoints, even tho only one of us even knows if it exists .
I realise this probably looks like some kind of gotcha or word game but imo that's just a result of art's inherently political nature, to try to deny apiece of art a political element, that art has to be indistinguishable from art that doesn't exist.

Here's maybe a better way for me to put my view: All art is concerned with values. The creation of any piece of art is a comment, whether positive, negative or neutral, on values. Any comment on values is a call to pay attention to something (whether to encourage or discourage), or to ignore it. That's political.
That is, in fact, what politics is.

great example, but two key differences: my understanding is he didn't release his work because he was insecure about it, not because he didn't want it sullied by the act of observation by the public or in an attempt to be apolitical. also, his buddy released all his manuscripts etc, against his wishes.

Dan, as someone who records every day but has never allowed anyone to hear any of it - would it be fair to say I am an artist whose art is not political? i have no intent to reinforce some set of values on society at all yet am producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (by myself). if i release this work posthumously - how would that change things?
